Here's some of the troubles we faced this week due to the incompetency of a hosting provider more focused on earning quick money than providing decent service:
After transferring a client's new website to the hosting provider's server, we discovered that none of the forms would work. We rang the company to ask them to fix the problem, and the response we received was basically, "Your code is wrong, it's definitely not our fault, fix it yourself."
Having already checked everything at our end, we knew this wasn't the case, but we double checked anyway - and sure enough, the problem was with the hosting. Upon transferring the website to our own server, everything worked without fault straight away.
After this encounter things continued on their downhill trajectory, and the hosting provider was hacked. Gaping holes in their security allowed multiple websites to be taken completely offline. Rhye Media was contacted by numerous clients who had lost all e-mail services, but there was nothing we could do until the hosting provider sorted themselves out.
One particular client had been having trouble with his e-mails for weeks; every single time he wanted to check his mail and do a send/receive, he was asked to enter his password, which should have been automatically saved. He rang the help department and was told that it was a fault with his ISP. His ISP, however, checked everything at their end and informed him there was no fault there. He rang the hosting provider back again and after waiting on hold for a few hours was told that the problem must be on his own computer; they suggested that he had been hacked, or had a corrupt file.
Four weeks later his hosting has been moved onto our servers and all is running perfectly.
As shown in these instances, web hosting and web development are two completely different things. We would like to reiterate the fact that if your site does go offline you should not automatically assume that the problem lies in the website coding, as it will most likely be a hosting issue. Your designer will not appreciate being blamed for something that is not their fault and completely out of their power to fix.
