If you're a local reader you've probably heard about the huge disaster that was Click Frenzy, the online sales bonanza that was nicknamed Click Fail after its servers couldn't cope with the millions of people trying to shop and ended up crashing spectacularly. This highlights a lack of foresight and rather poor planning, because if you're going to a hype up an online sale as much as that, you should know to make sure you have enough bandwidth.
Even though it was inaccessible to most customers for a good three hours, however, Click Frenzy has highlighted just how eager Australians are to embrace the idea of online shopping. Data and market research company Experian says that on an average day, shopping and classifieds websites get 22.1 million hits from Australians, and that during the 24 hours Click Frenzy was running this jumped to 29.5 million.
While only 8.7 million of these visits were to retailers directly participating in Click Frenzy, the event still supposedly sold more than double that of the second largest sales day. And having all those people armed with their credit cards and ready to shop online but unable to access Click Frenzy proved fortunate for other online retailers, too, with a 30% boost in sales to stores that weren't participating.
As life gets busier, online shopping gets more convenient - and who doesn't love getting packages in the mail?
